Len Jewitt

Len was a lively. Mischievous, awkward, spiky little b….r who was always full of high spirits and devilment. He had the distinction of being in the very best of pre-war Farnborough entry No.7 and after demob in 1948, spent the rest of his working life in the photo services organisation of the University of Cambridge.

One of his photographic achievements was to take the oblique air photo of Cologne Cathedral showing the devastated area around the untouched church. The photo was chosen for the cover of R C Nesbits “Eyes of the RAF”

Len leaves behind his wife Joan, a very gutsy lady who, after fourteen years of married life, contracted MS and has been wheelchair bound ever since.

An enduring sight is that of Len. who was quite small, manhandling Joan’s wheelchair through the streets of Cambridge, or manoeuvring her with great dexterity into his Vauxhall Astra.

Despite her severe disablement, Joan manages to do many household chores. Having had to manage without Len for the past four months, she has coped admirably, with the aid of a daughter who is able to visit her regularly. So there you have it – another old warrior gone.

He died in Cherry Hinton, Cambridge.
